What does it mean to be housebound?

Housebound Policy

A patient is considered housebound if they can’t leave their home due to a physical or mental illness. If a person can leave the house with some help, for example to visit the doctor, dentist, hairdresser, hospital, shop, or attend social events, they are not considered housebound.

To qualify as housebound, you must be physically unable to leave your home on your own. Not having transport does not count. We can provide information about local taxi services or volunteer groups if needed, but we may also suggest asking a family member or friend for a lift.

Benefits of the Housebound Policy:

  • Patients who are unable to travel will receive care at home more quickly and easily.
  • Medical care will be provided in the safest place for the patient.
  • Healthcare teams will use their time more efficiently.

A healthcare professional will decide whether a patient needs a home visit. If the patient’s needs change, their housebound status will be reviewed.
