Clinics

We offer the following clinics and services:

  • General care for medical conditions
  • Health advice to help you stay healthy
  • Emergency care (if appropriate)
  • Referrals to other services
  • Urgent care for people who are staying nearby for a short time but not registered with us. These are “temporary resident” patients.
The community midwife runs a clinic every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 pm onwards. From December 2024, this clinic will be offered at the Baldwins Lane Surgery site.

Once you know you are pregnant, plan to see the midwife at around eight weeks since your last period or soon after. She can give you a lot of information and will help you through your pregnancy until after your baby is born.

Pregnant patients who want to deliver at Watford General Hospital should self-refer to the Maternity service at West Herts Hospitals.
For patients on warfarin treatment, the nurse will check your INR. You’ll get a written record of your daily dose and your next appointment.
Our asthma nurses run this clinic. It’s designed to help you keep your asthma under control.

Please arrange to see them at least once a year. We prefer to see you when you are well and help you stay that way. It’s better than waiting until you need our help during an asthma emergency.

Everyone with asthma should know what their best peak flow rate is. You should understand the difference between preventer and reliever medicines. It’s also important to know what to do if your asthma gets worse. Do you know this?

One of the practice sisters gives immunisations every Tuesday afternoon. We will arrange appointments children in line with the UK schedule. The UK childhood immunisation programme helps protect against unpleasant and sometimes dangerous diseases.

We know that some parents may worry about immunising their children. Please talk with us before making any decisions about your child’s protection.

All the doctors can give you advice about contraception during regular appointments. Some of our doctors can also fit intrauterine contraceptive devices, known as “coils” or long-term contraceptive implants. If you want to talk about getting a coil or contraceptive implant fitted, please ask when you call reception.

For emergency contraception, you can buy the morning-after pill from any pharmacy. You can also get it with a prescription during an appointment with one of the doctors. You need to take it within 72 hours after unprotected sex.

The pill is a good way to prevent pregnancy. But remember condoms help to protect you against sexually transmitted infections.

We work hard to invite everyone with diabetes to come for a yearly check-up in this clinic.

We send out an invitation ahead of time and ask you to have a blood test two weeks before your appointment. This is so we have the results ready when you come. During the visit, we want to talk about your thoughts and worries about your diabetes. We also check important things like your eyes and feet.

We recommend that you go for an annual eye screening at Watford General Hospital. You should get a reminder for this unless you are already going to see a consultant at an eye clinic. If you already see a consultant, you don’t need the extra screening.

Our main goal is to help you take control of your health. If you don’t know what your HbA1c level is, you need to come and see us.
We offer a very limited service to help elderly and vulnerable patients with ear syringing.

But most of our patients should expect to use a pharmacy or other syringing service.

Some local services include Riverside Pharmacy, Boots Heaingcare, the Micro suction clinic in St Albans and some branches of Specsavers.

We may suggest that you talk to the pharmacist if your problem is one of these.
If needed, the pharmacist will always ask a doctor to see you.
We offer a limited service to take blood from our most elderly and vulnerable patients. We sometimes can do urgent blood tests when requested by one of the doctors.

But most of our patients should book a blood test appointment at one of the West Hertfordshire Hospitals. To have a hospital blood test, you must book an appointment as there isn’t a walk-in clinic. Appointments can be booked from as early as the same day in some cases.

You must collect your blood test form from us before going to hospital. If you prefer, we can email the form to you so you can print it at home.
We have limited availability for travel vaccinations. If you have foreign travel planned and we can’t offer an appointment, there are local pharmacies which offer travel advice and vaccinations.

To help us give you the right advice, we need some details from you. Please fill out the online Travel Questionnaire before you come to see the nurse. If more than one person is travelling, we’ll need a separate form for each person.

Other Services

  • Adult vaccinations
    • See the NHS schedule on vaccinations recommended for adults
  • Child health surveillance 
    • provided by the health visitor team
  • Influenza immunisations 
    • every autumn for people 65 years old and over and at risk groups

The following groups can ask for an appointment for a checkup:

  • patients aged 16 to 75 who haven’t seen us for 3 years
  • patients 75 and over who haven’t seen us in the previous 12 months
    • (If you can’t get to the surgery for these checks because of your medical condition, we can arrange a home visit)
